With colder temperatures comes a higher risk of fire- and property damage.
So attorney J.P. Gonzalez-Sirgo has some important advice on what to do if you need to file an insurance claim as the result of a fire.
First- Mitigate:
Do everything you can to make temporary repairs so the condition doesn't get worse. You don't want the insurance company to say the damage was the result of your negligence. Got a leak in the roof after a fire? Then get a tarp.
Document:
1) Try not to pay for temporary fixes in cash, but if you do make sure to get receipts and contact information. You will need it as part of your claim.
2) A picture is worth a thousand words so photograph or better yet, video tape the impacted areas.
3) Hang onto every piece of correspondence from the insurance company. Remember: use certified mail, request a return receipt and make copies of everything.
4) Tempting as it might be- don't throw out any of the fire damaged items in your house.
Notify:
Call your insurance company and let them know what happened, get the name of the adjuster assigned to your claim , along with contact info and your claim number.
Then call attorney J.P. Gonzalez-Sirgo. Even if your claim is closed or you were paid less than you deserved, you may still fight for a fair settlement.
