A recent article posted on New Scientist’s website suggests that Crohn’s disease may actually be caused by immune cells that aren’t doing enough in the beginning phases of bacterial infection.  This theory is in contrast to what was originally believed, which is that Crohn’s disease is caused by an over-exuberant immune system.

Approximately 1 in 1000 people in the United States and Europe suffer from Crohn’s disease.  Some of the symptoms of this medical condition include abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, diarrhea, fatigue and cramping.

Anthony Segal from the University College of London, along with his colleagues, discovered that there was a weaker immune response in patients with Crohn’s disease than healthy people after both groups were injected with heat-killed Escherichia coli.

Based on the new findings, it is possible that some of the treatments for Crohn’s disease may be making things worse, instead of helping.  Treatments for Crohn’s disease often focus on suppressing the immune system.

If you suffer from Crohn’s disease, you may be eligible for disability benefits.  The Law Firm of J.P. Gonzalez-Sirgo, P.A. represents individuals that have had their valid long term disability benefits denied, delayed or terminated irrespective of whether the policy was purchased individually or issued through an employer group policy.  The firm is available to assist individuals with the initial application process, during the administrative appeals process, handling denials of claims or termination of benefits, litigation in state or federal court, and negotiating a one-time lump sum settlement or buy-out.
