Recently, Good Morning America broke a story on a woman diagnosed with cancer that was denied short term and long term disability coverage by her insurer Cigna. The delay and deny tactics lasted for over 18 months. In the meantime, the insured, Susan Kristoff, was unable to work and struggled to pay bills. She cried plenty and had thoughts of committing suicide. Ms. Kristoff was stricken with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer.
The turning point was when she decided to hire a long term disability insurance claims lawyer to represent her in this matter. Shortly thereafter, Cigna paid her on her short term disability policy. Months after that, Cigna decided to approve her long term disability payments of 60% of her salary.
