If you have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, then you need to be aware of a recent study.  According to researchers, an internal body clock that isn't working properly could be an element in the development of bipolar disorder in children.

The study examined 152 children who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and 140 children who do not have the condition.  Researchers focused on evaluating the children's genetic makeup.  The findings linked variations in a gene termed, RORB, to the children with bipolar.

The study's co-author, Dr. Alexander Niculescu with the Indiana University School of Medicine, said in a news release that, "Our findings suggest that clock genes in general, and RORB in particular, may be important candidates for further investigation in the search for the molecular basis of bipolar disorder."

The RORB gene is generally expressed in the eye, pineal gland and brain.  It is believed to be associated with the body's circadian rhythm, which is defined by Encyclopedia Britannica as, "the cyclical 24-hour period of human biological activity."
