A traumatic brain injury or TBI is an injury to the brain caused by a trauma such as a car wreck or fall or other type of incident.  It can lead to a permanent or temporary disability and the inability to work.  A TBI can be in the form of a mild concussion or a more serious head injury, resulting in brain damage. This type of head trauma is often deadly.  Unfortunately, traumatic brain injuries are more common than realized.

An estimated 1.7 million people suffer from traumatic brain injuries each year. Of those, 52,000 people are likely to die and 275,000 people will require hospitalization. What is even more alarming is that these TBI cases contribute to nearly 30.5 percent of all injury-related deaths in the United States.

It is estimated that traumatic brain injuries cost about $60 billion dollars in direct medical costs, as well as indirect costs, such as lost productivity.
