Lumbar spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the lumbar spinal canal which puts pressure on the sciatic nerve roots and causes positional back pain, lower extremity pain during walking or lifting, and nerve root compression.

The most common causes include osteoarthritis, degenerative disk disorders and spondylolisthesis, Paget's disease of the bone, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. Symptoms include pain in the buttocks, thighs or calves during walking, running, climbing stairs or even standing.  Surgery is the common treatment for severe spinal stenosis.
