If you have a complaint against your life insurance company due to a denial of a life insurance claim or other bad faith insurance practice, you can file a complaint against the insurance company with your state regulatory agency. The name of your state agency may vary: Insurance Commissioner, Department of Insurance, etc.
Generally, the proceess is as follows:
- You will be asked to complete a complaint form. You should be able to do this online in most states.
- The state agency will then contact your insurer and ask for a response to your complaint. Upon receipt of the response, you will be copied with the insurance company's position.
- The state employee may communicate with the insurance company in a limited attempt at resolving the dispute.
It is important to note that these state agencies have limited powers and resources and in some instances more than a cozy relationsip with the insurance companies they are theoretically suppose to regulate. These complaints are typically effective in getting an insurance company to respond to your complaint, but in our exprience, rarely assist in getting coverage issues resolved, denials overturned, or lowball offers raised.
