Carpal tunnel syndrome is when the median nerve is compressed at the wrist causing tingling sensation, numbness, pain, and muscle weakness in the hand.  These symptoms cause sufferers to wake at night.  Exact causes of carpal tunnel syndrome are unknown, but have been associated with trauma, pregnancy, multiple myeloma and other suspected triggers.  It is believed that the strongest risk factor is genetic predisposition.  However, many speculate that carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by work related activities.  Specifically, work tasks that require repetition, grasping, posture, force and vibration have been associated with causing carpal tunnel syndrome.

Treatment methods include wearing a wrist brace, steroid injection, medications, physical therapy, and surgical release of the transverse carpal ligament.
