Unum to Pay $676 Million Dollars

The largest disability insurer in the U.S., Unum Group, has agreed to pay an additional $676 million dollars to some 9,500 policyholders as part of their settlement agreement reached in 2004.

Investigations by state regulators found that Unum routinely forced its very own customers to prove their disability claims were indeed valid, causing undo hardship to the policyholder during the claims process. This practice caused many valid disability claims to go unpaid, underpaid and extensively delayed.
