Crohn’s Disease Disability Insurance Claim

If you have been diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, you are probably feeling overwhelmed.  Up until this point, you may have never heard of this medical condition that affects an estimated 400,000 to 600,000 people in North America.  Crohn’s disease, also referred to as granulomatous colitis and regional enteritis, is defined as a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that involves ongoing inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract.  The exact cause of this inflammatory disease is still unknown.

The inflammation related to Crohn’s disease typically affects the intestines, but it can happen in other areas of the body, from the mouth to the end of the rectum. It is considered to be an autoimmune disease, because the body’s immune system attacks the gastrointestinal tract.  This condition can affect individuals of any age.

Many people who have Crohn’s disease are not diagnosed right away.  Symptoms of Crohn’s disease vary depending on what area of the gastrointestinal tract is impacted.  The symptoms, which are listed below, can range from mild to severe:

  • Abdominal pain and cramping
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Persistent diarrhea
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Abdominal fullness
  • Fistulas
  • Constipation
  • Eye inflammation
  • Joint pain
  • Kidney stones
  • Appetite loss
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Skin rash

Crohn’s disease is a chronic medical condition and is known for having periods of improvement followed by episodes when symptoms flare up.  Even though there is no cure for Crohn’s disease, there are treatment options that will control the symptoms.  When Crohn’s disease is controlled, this condition does not have to affect daily living.  Medications are often prescribed to treat any infection or symptoms that are present.  Lifestyle changes can also help manage this disease.  For example, adjustments in the diet, adequate hydration and avoiding smoking can help.
