A Special Investigative Unit (SIU) is a department within an insurance company that investigates insurance claims for possible policyholder fraud. Typical cases of insurance fraud include staged auto theft, arson, or inflated property damage to home or car. Many SIU investigators have law enforcement experience along with insurance knowledge. Many auto, boat, motorcycle or truck theft claims are automatically referred to the SIU department.
