If you have a complaint against your life insurance company due to a denial of a life insurance claim or other bad faith insurance practice, you may want to start with filing a complaint against the insurance company with your state regulatory agency. The name of your state agency may vary: Insurance Commissioner, Department of Insurance, etc.
Generally, the proceess is as follows:
- You will be asked to complete a complaint form. You should be able to do this online in many states.
- The state agency will then contact your insurer and ask for its position or for a response to your complaint. Upon receipt of the response, you will be copied with the insurance company's position.
- The state employee will go back and forth with the insurance company in a limited manner attempting to resolve the dispute.
It is important to note that these state agencies have limited powers and in some instances more than cozy relationsips with the insurance companies they are suppose to regulate. These complaints are typically effective in getting an insurance company to respond to your complaint, but in my exprience, rarely assist in getting coverage issues resolved, denials overturned, or lowball offers raised.
