How Effective is Filing a Complaint with the State Against Your Life Insurance Company?

If you have a complaint against your life insurance company due to a denial of a life insurance claim or other bad faith insurance practice, you may want to start with filing a complaint against the insurance company with your state regulatory agency.  The name of your state agency may vary:  Insurance Commissioner, Department of Insurance, etc.

Generally, the proceess is as follows:

  • You will be asked to complete a complaint form.  You should be able to do this online in many states.
  • The state agency will then contact your insurer and ask for its position or for a response to your complaint.  Upon receipt of the response, you will be copied with the insurance company's position.
  • The state employee will go back and forth with the insurance company in a limited manner attempting to resolve the dispute.

It is important to note that these state agencies have limited powers and in some instances more than cozy relationsips with the insurance companies they are suppose to regulate.  These complaints are typically effective in getting an insurance company to respond to your complaint, but in my exprience, rarely assist in getting coverage issues resolved, denials overturned, or lowball offers raised.

I was quoted by 4 different employees an amount to upgrade our term senior life insurance from $10,000 to $25,000. Yesterday paid the amount requested as to what was quoted with the help of a Supervisor and had previously received a letter in the mail stating what my new premium would be. Today the company called and left a message and asked for an additional amount with a new premium amount not what was quoted. Apparently 4 different employees gave me the wrong information. Waiting for a call from a Manager. Furious with Union Plus Life Insurance Company plus the first employee told me there was no waiting period for the $25,000 to go into effect since we had the $10,000 coverage for a year, that also was incorrect information given. No one gave me the correct information about anything!!!
